Ohio high school boys basketball state tournament recap: by the numbers

The 96th annual Ohio High School Athletic Association boys basketball state tournament was held last weekend at the Schottenstein Center on the Campus of The Ohio State University. Sixteen teams advanced to the state tourney in four divisions. Three of the four champions won at least their third state titles, while one school captured its first. Here is a look at some of the top teams, players, numbers and nuggets.

'18 OHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament: By The Numbers

1 – Number of Ohio boys basketball teams to finish undefeated this season. Deer Park (Cincinnati) went 29-0 en route to winning the Division III state title.

1 – Number of state titles Deer Park has in program history.

2 – Number of state titles (out of four) that private schools won in the first year of the OHSAA’s Competitive Balance initiative.

2 - Number of double-doubles Deer Park junior Joseph Hocker had in the state tournament. Posted 10 points and 18 rebounds in a semifnial win over Lutheran East (Cleveland Heights) and 10 points and 10 rebounds in a finals win over Africentric Early College (Columbus).

4 – Boys basketball state titles Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) has after beating Solon 83-65 in the D-I state final. Only 12 schools in state history have four or more titles.

4 – Players Moeller had that scored 14 or more points in the state final: Jeremiah Davenport (22), Jaxson Hayes (14), Alec Pfriem (14) and Miles McBride (14).

4 – Number of schools in state history to win football and basketball titles in the same school year. Marion Local (Maria Stein) doubled-up with a 52-51 double-OT victory over Cornerstone Christian (Willoughby) in the D-IV basketball final. The Flyers won the D-VI football state title in December.

8 – Number of boys basketball state titles St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron) owns following 60-51 defeat of Trotwood-Madison in the D-II state final. SVSM is the only school in Ohio history to achieve eight basketball titles. Middletown and Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland) each have seven. The Irish are two-time defending state champions.

8 – Number of losses Akron SVSM had this season. The Irish, once 9-8, finish 21-8.

9 – Regular season wins Lutheran East had. The Falcons were 7-13 at one point before putting together a seven-game win streak and reaching the D-III state semifinals.

11 – Third quarter deficit Deer Park overcame to beat Africentric in the D-III state final (67-57). Down 11 with 5:37 left, the Wildcats closed the quarter on a 17-5 run for a 46-45 lead entering the fourth quarter. All told, Deer Park outscored the Nubians 40-21 in the second half.

19 – State titles Marion Local has as a school following its D-IV championship.

19 – First half points Pandora-Gilboa’s Drew Johnson scored in a D-IV semifinal loss to Marion Local.

21 – First half points Pickerington Central’s Adrian Nelson scored in a D-I semifinal loss to Solon.

45 – Points senior Michael Bothwell scored in two state tournament games for D-IV runner-up Cornerstone Christian. Also had 11 rebounds, six steals, five blocks and four assists.

56 – Points Solon senior guard Sincere Carry had in two D-I state tournament games.

64 – Points Moeller scored in the paint in its D-I state final win over Solon.

70 – Points Solon scored in the final three quarters of its 82-78 D-I semifinal win over Pickerington Central.

127 – Overall state titles the Midwest Athletic Conference has following Marion Local’s title in D-IV.

1923 – Year of the inaugural OHSAA boys state tournament. Also the last time prior to this season that Lorain has appeared in the Final Four. The Titans won the Class A state championship in 1923 with a 15-14 victory over Bellevue.

2000 – The year it was the last time a D-III team finished undefeated. Eighteen years ago Akron St. Vincent St. Mary, led by freshman LeBron James, went 27-0.

10,899 – Attendance for the D-I semifinal between Moeller and Lorain. That was the highest attended game of the 12 (semifinals and finals).
