The Southport Cardinals's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their tenth straight loss. They suffered a tough 50-30 loss at the hands of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory. While losing is never fun, Southport can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 359th, while Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory is ranked 169th).
Despite the loss, Southport still got an impressive performance from Sophia Nguyen, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds. Those 11 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Lorelei bennett, who scored eight points along with six rebounds.
Southport struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Southport's loss was their sixth straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 1-13. As for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-6.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southport will finish 2023 at home by hosting Heritage Christian at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Heritage Christian focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 last Tuesday. As for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Covenant Christian at 7:30 p.m. on January 4, 2024.
