Baseball Game Preview: Wellsboro Hornets vs. Shikellamy Braves

Wellsboro hasn't had much luck against Shikellamy recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Hornets will challenge the Braves at 2:30 p.m. Wellsboro will be strutting in after a victory while Shikellamy will be coming in after a defeat.

Wellsboro's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 16-0 margin over Wyalusing Valley. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won six contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

Gabe Sprouse made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Wellsboro is 4-2 when he allows at most two walks, but 4-6 otherwise. Sprouse was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

In other batting news, Cameron Owlett was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Dustin Owlett, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 14 runs the game before, Shikellamy was a bit more limited in their game on Monday. They fell just short of Selinsgrove by a score of 2-1.

Charlie Walter spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

Wellsboro pushed their record up to 8-8 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Shikellamy, their loss dropped their record down to 4-12.

Wellsboro might still be hurting after the 11-0 defeat they got from Shikellamy in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Hornets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
