Maiden's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Shannon Wingate, who rushed for 294 yards and three scores while picking up 13.4 yards per carry. Those 294 rushing yards gave Wingate a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Grant Lawing, who threw for 171 yards and three TDs while completing 87.5% of his passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Maiden was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 360 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Newton-Conover came tearing into Friday's contest with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.7 points), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Tigers by a score of 24-14. Given the Red Devils' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 88th, while the Tigers are ranked 203rd) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Maiden better keep an eye on Jeremiah Pope. He was instrumental in Newton-Conover's win, rushing for 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Pope showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 60 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Newton-Conover's defense and their three sacks. Jerry Forney was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself.
Maiden's record now sits at 7-4. As for Newton-Conover, their record is now 9-2.
Maiden came up short against Newton-Conover in their previous meeting back in October, falling 19-13. Can the Blue Devils avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
