Madison is 2-8 against Brandeis since November of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Madison Mavericks on the road again and play against the Brandeis Broncos at 6:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, Madison strolled past SA Roosevelt with points to spare, taking the game 56-37. The victory was just what Madison needed coming off of a 58-36 defeat in their prior contest.
It was another big night for Nadia Bailey, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. She has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Yazmin Torrez, who scored 11 points.
Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, Brandeis' good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell to Lee 71-67. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Brandeis came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while Lee is ranked 204th).
Brandeis' defeat came about despite a quality game from Rian Forestier, who dropped a double-double on 44 points and 20 rebounds. That was a full 65.7% of Brandeis' points, marking the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Abigail Burdette, who scored ten points.
Madison's victory bumped their record up to 13-18. As for Brandeis, their loss dropped their record down to 22-9.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Madison have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 33.2 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Brandeis, though, as they've been averaging only 32.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Madison was dealt a bruising 70-37 loss at the hands of Brandeis when the teams last played back in December of 2023. Can Madison avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
