Baseball Recap: Riverdale Takes a Loss

Riverdale extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 7-10 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Weston Silver Eagles. That's two games in a row now that the Chieftains have lost by just one run.

Riverdale got a good showing from Jackson Bomkamp, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits.

On the hitting side, Eli Campbell was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Riverdale: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-9 otherwise.

As for Weston, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 12-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games.

On Weston's side, Isaac Jennings was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Jennings has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April.

Jennings wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gavin Kast, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Riverdale will take on Fennimore at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so the Chieftains' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Weston, they will head out to challenge Ithaca at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Silver Eagles 3.4, the Bulldogs 2.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
