The Clinton Prairie Gophers are taking a road trip to take on the Carroll Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Clinton Prairie is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Clinton Prairie took a 12-run defeat the last time they faced off against West Lafayette, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Gophers had just enough and edged out the Red Devils 6-5 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Gophers have posted since May 13, 2024.
Maddy Wessell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on ten hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Zelda Wampler was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Kadie Fearnow also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Carroll entered their tilt with Taylor on Tuesday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They never let the Titans get on the board and left with a 19-0 victory. Surprisingly, this marked the Cougars' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Madi Isley and Olivia Schroder did most of the damage at the plate: Isley went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Schroder got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. Aleah Savoie was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three RBI and one double.
Carroll always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .500 or higher in five consecutive matches.
Clinton Prairie is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Carroll, their record is now 7-3.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Clinton Prairie hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .363. However, it's not like Carroll struggles in that department as they've averaged .347. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Clinton Prairie suffered a grim 18-5 defeat to Carroll in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Gophers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
