Helix is a perfect 10-0 against Mount Miguel since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Highlanders will challenge the Matadors at 4:00 p.m. Helix is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.6 runs per game this season.
Helix will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Monday, then bounced right back against Monte Vista on Friday. The Highlanders' pitchers stepped up to hand the Monarchs a 20-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Highlanders, who have now won 12 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Katelyn Woodland looked comfortable as she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Naviah Conchas and LaNiah Broom did most of the damage at the plate: Conchas got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four RBI, one run, and one double, while Broom went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Lauren Farace was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Helix was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .708. They are a perfect 12-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Grossmont hit Mount Miguel with a four-run second inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Matadors lost 11-1 to the Foothillers. The defeat continues a trend for the Matadors in their meetings with the Foothillers: they've now lost nine in a row.
Mount Miguel saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kelly Jelowdar, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double. That double marked the first that Jelowdar has hit this season. Another was A Sinsay, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Helix has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.3 runs over those games. As for Mount Miguel, their loss dropped their record down to 5-9.
Mount Miguel's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Helix has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.6 hits per game. It's a different story for Mount Miguel, though, as they've been averaging 10.1 hits. Given Helix's sizable advantage in that area, the Matadors will need to find a way to close that gap.
Helix took their victory against Mount Miguel in their previous meeting back in April by a conclusive 19-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Highlanders since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
