Make it 11 blowout wins for the Vela Sabercats this season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Tuesday as they easily beat Sharyland 69-21 at home. Given Vela's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 301st, while Sharyland is ranked 1153rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Vela to victory were Gg Betancourt and Janai Coleman. Betancourt scored 21 points along with three steals, while Coleman scored 26 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Gabrielle Tijerina was another key contributor, scoring two points along with four steals.
Grace Shahin and Alexia Chapa certainly did their best on Tuesday to try and avoid the loss. Shahin scored eight points along with six rebounds, while Chapa scored six points along with two steals. Another player making a difference was Samantha Sanchez, who scored three points along with nine rebounds.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Sharyland struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They are 1-6 when they just don't pass the ball.
Vela has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 17 of their last 19 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 24-5 record this season. As for Sharyland, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-19.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Vela will face off against Valley View at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The timing isn't great for Valley View: they have been struggling with five straight losses at home, while Vela has snatched up 21 consecutive wins on the road dating back to last season. As for Sharyland, they will challenge McAllen Memorial at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. McAllen Memorial will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
