Basketball Recap: St. John Paul II Academy Comes Up Short

If St. John Paul II Academy was feeling good fresh off their 71-44 takedown of Odyssey Charter School last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The St. John Paul II Academy Eagles took a 66-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks on Wednesday. The Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mavericks apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

Despite the loss, St. John Paul II Academy still got an impressive performance from Dior Johnson, who went 12 for 21 on his way to 31 points. The dominant performance gave Johnson a new career-high in points. Sebastian Mesa was another key player, going 5 for 11 on his way to 10 points.

Archbishop McCarthy's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Andrew Okafor, who went 6 of 12 on his way to 16 points in addition to six rebounds and four blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Richard Segovia, who went 5 for 11 on his way to 14 points in addition to five assists and five boards.

St. John Paul II Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Archbishop McCarthy, they now also have a winning record of 3-2.

St. John Paul II Academy wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 48-34 loss against Atlantic Christian on the 5th. As for Archbishop McCarthy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 69-56 victory against Trinity Christian Academy on the 6th.
