Football Recap: Friday's Defeat Ends Commerce's Winning Streak

It was a good run, but Commerce unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Friday. They fell 32-27 to Mount Vernon. Commerce gained 131 more yards on the day, but it was Mount Vernon that made the best use of them.

Commerce's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Ky'mani Graham, who rushed for 180 yards and a pair of TDs on only eight carries, and Aidan Brown, who rushed for 157 yards while picking up 9.8 yards per carry. Graham's longest rush was for an impressive 65 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Lukah Selvaggi also helped with two scores in total.

While Commerce came up short, they sure didn't make it easy for Mount Vernon: they limited their QB to completion percentage of just 50%. Sadly, that's becoming something of a trend for Commerce; they were averaging 60.6%completion percentage earlier this season, but in their last three contests they've fallen to only 60.6%.

Commerce didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Brandon Anderson Jr. Another thorn in Mount Vernon's side was Alan Rios, who made 12 total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Dawson Witherspoon was his usual excellent self, rushing for 233 yards and one touchdown while picking up 7.5 yards per carry for Mount Vernon. Witherspoon has become a key player for Mount Vernon: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least 100 rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise.

Commerce's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 7-2. As for Mount Vernon, their win bumped their record up to 6-4.

Commerce does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mount Vernon, they will face off against Gladewater at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers will need to watch out since the Bears have now posted at least 31 points in their last five matchups.
