Western Albemarle hasn't had much luck against Monticello recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Warriors will be playing in front of their home fans against the Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. Western Albemarle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.7 runs per game this season.
While Western Albemarle didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Goochland on Thursday, sneaking past 9-8.
Samia Bird was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Another player making a difference was Summer Jones, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Western Albemarle hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Monticello never let their opponents score on Thursday. They put the hurt on Albemarle with a sharp 17-0 victory. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Patriots recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.
Delaney Via was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024. Dorothy Shoup was another key player, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Western Albemarle's victory was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Monticello, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.
Monticello's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Western Albemarle has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .493.
