Maplewood and Chalker are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Rockets will face off against the Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Maplewood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.
Maplewood is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Mathews just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mustangs. The matchup marked the Rockets' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Maplewood saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aleesia Woomer, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Chalker came tearing into Thursday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Red Devils a 14-0 shutout. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Gabby Hromada made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Abby Grimm and Kelsey Kren did most of the damage at the plate: Grimm went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one triple, while Kren went 2-for-4 with one home run and three runs. That's the most runs Kren has posted since back in April. Tatum Hudak was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Chalker lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Chalker pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.1 runs over those games. As for Maplewood, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-4.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Maplewood hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .359. However, it's not like Chalker struggles in that department as they've averaged .424. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Maplewood was able to grind out a solid victory over Chalker in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, winning 8-5. Do the Rockets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
