WAKE FOREST, N.C. -
Sanderson (Raleigh, N.C.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 14-10 victory over
Wake Forest (N.C.) on Saturday. The Spartans took the lead for good when they scored a defensive touchdown.
After taking the lead on a field goal by
Nic Deluke, the Cougars went into halftime with a 3-0 lead. The Spartans scored the winning points with a defensive touchdown that came in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Sanderson still trailed by three points going into the fourth quarter. But 14 points in the fourth helped SHS pull out the victory.
Sanderson's defense chipped in with six points of its own during the win.
Wake Forest's only touchdown came on a 48-yard run by
Bryce Love in the fourth quarter.
Coming into the game the Spartans had allowed 18.1 points per game this year. Sanderson held firm on the defensive front, and kept Wake Forest well below the 35.0 points it had been averaging per game.
SHS avenged last year's 34-14 loss to WF with the victory.
With the win the Raleigh school extended its winning streak to three games.
Wake Forest (7-3) goes up against Enloe in a 4A Conference 11 game matchup next week, while Sanderson (6-4) locks horns with Millbrook also in a 4A Conference 11 game.
