Softball Recap: Muncie Central Comes Up Short

Muncie Central extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to six on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-5 in the process. They lost 24-6 to the Winchester Community Golden Falcons. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bearcats of the 19-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for Winchester Community, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-2. Considering they have won four matchups by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

For Winchester Community's part, Cassidi Ruble and Lizzie Frazier made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Ruble pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Frazier tossed 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Ruble has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, Ruble went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBI, while Frazier went 2-for-3 with two runs. That's the most runs Ruble has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Ava Lanter and Laila Salazar did most of the damage at the plate: Lanter went 3-for-5 with six RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while Salazar got on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. With that strong performance, Salazar is now averaging an impressive 2.3 runs per game. Delaney Byrd also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Muncie Central will take on Marion at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Giants have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11 runs per game on average), something the Bearcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Winchester Community, they will be playing at home against Cambridge City Lincoln at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
