Basketball Recap: Chandler Takes a Loss

Chandler was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were one points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 47-46 heartbreaker at the hands of the Canyon Cowboys. That's two games in a row now that the Wolves have lost by just one point.

When it comes to explaining why Chandler lost, don't look at Markayla Shirley. Despite the final result, she posted 11 points. Shirley has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Karis Hurd was another key player, putting up eight points and four steals.

Even though they lost, Chandler smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Canyon only pulled down six offensive boards.

Leading Canyon to victory were Darby Dunn and Shannen Wilson. Dunn went 7 of 11 on her way to 18 points along with eight steals and five assists, while Wilson went 7 of 9 on her way to 18 points and three steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Wilson has scored at least a third of Canyon's points.

Chandler's loss dropped their record down to 10-4. As for Canyon, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-6.

Chandler will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Gilbert at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Chandler is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season. As for Canyon, they will take on Rio Mesa in a tournament on Thursday.
