Video: Highlights of Erick Buchanan
Top plays from the Madison running back in an earlier game this season.
Talk about an uphill climb.
Madison (San Diego, Calif.) kicker
David Lantz booted a 47-yard field goal with no time left in regulation and then
Erick Buchanan scored on a 10-yard run in overtime to help the host Warhawks pull out a stunning 60-53 win over previously unbeaten
Calabasas in CIF South Regional Division 2-AA play on Friday night.
After Buchanan's touchdown, Calabasas had a chance to tie or win it. But a fourth-down pass from the 1-yard line by
Tristan Gebbia for 5-star recruit
Darnay Holmes fell incomplete. Gebbia was brilliant all night with seven touchdown passes and another one rushing.
Calabasas (15-1) held a 47-28 with less than 10 minutes to play but three missed extra points and an interception thrown with less than a minute to go, led to the improbable Madison victory. The touchdown in overtime for Madison was its first lead of the game.
Madison (12-2) now plays Valley Christian (San Jose) in the state championship at Sacramento State University.
Calabasas, brilliant all season, took a 47-28 lead with 9:23 left on a 5-yard pass from Gebbia to Holmes. The visitor's looked like they had it in the bag. They got a career game from
Nikko Hall, who had two touchdown catches, more than 200 yards in receptions and three interceptions on defense.
But Madison began to come back.
A 33-yard touchdown pass from
Terrell Carter to
Elijah Thomas, cut the lead to 47-35 with 6:53 left. Madison recovered the onside kick and Carter found Buchanan on an 8-yard TD, cutting the lead to 47-42 with 5:19 remaining.
See all the scoring here But Calabasas seemed to take back control on a 25-yard touchdown run by
Johnny Wilson to go up 53-42. There was still no quit in Madison, which came right back as Carter ran it in from 19 yards out and added a two-point conversion to cut it to 53-50 with 3:22 left.
With 1:08 left, Gebbia was intercepted by Oregon-bound
Sampson Niu near midfield. A few plays later, Lantz lined up and drilled the game-tying field goal sending the game into overtime.
Buchanan scored on the first play, and three plays later, Gebbia's pass fell incomplete and a perfect season was over.
