Newton County is 0-6 against Neshoba Central since December of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Newton County Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Neshoba Central Rockets at 6:00 p.m. Newton County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 73rd, while Neshoba Central is ranked sixth).
Last Friday, Newton County came up short against Quitman and fell 41-33.
Meanwhile, Neshoba Central came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20 points) and they left with even more momentum. They breezed by Noxubee County at home to the tune of 81-21. Neshoba Central might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won six contests by 23 points or more this season.
Neshoba Central found their leader in underclassman Kyli Truss, who scored 22 points. That makes it two consecutive games in which Truss has scored at least 25% of Neshoba Central's points. Another player making a difference was Erica Lyons, who scored 12 points.
Newton County's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Neshoba Central, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-1.
Newton County was taken down by Neshoba Central 64-32 in their previous meeting back in November. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Neshoba Central's Truss, who dropped a double-double on 10 points and 12 steals.
