Union Pines hasn't had much luck against Scotland recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Union Pines Vikings will be playing at home against the Scotland Fighting Scots at 7:00 p.m. Union Pines is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Union Pines easily dispatched Lee County on Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Union Pines fell just short of Apex by a score of 6-4 on Thursday. The match marked the Vikings' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Haven Patterson made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple. That triple was her first of the season. Kileigh Cameron was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Scotland never let their opponents score on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 16-0 margin over Southern Lee. The game marked the Fighting Scots' most dominant victory of the season so far.
Avery Stutts made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Scotland let Emily Sampson and Addison Ratley run wild. Sampson scored two runs while going 2-for-2, while Ratley scored two runs while going 1-for-2. The dominant performance also gave Sampson a new career-high in RBI (three). Another player making a difference was Addison Lewis, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.
Scotland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .692. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Scotland's win bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Union Pines, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Union Pines has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Scotland struggles in that department as they've been averaging 13 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Union Pines might still be hurting after the 7-0 defeat they got from Scotland in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will Union Pines have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other softball content.
