The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals will head out to challenge the Howland Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cardinal Mooney is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Cardinal Mooney sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over Ursuline.
Ford Stacy made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed seven innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kaden Reese, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Howland duked it out with Struthers on Tuesday. The Tigers put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 15-5 win. Considering the Tigers have won five games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Cardinal Mooney, Howland also got a great game from a two-way player: Bode Biggin. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and not a single walk). Biggin was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Howland is undefeated when Biggin posts two or more runs, but 2-6 otherwise.
In other pitching news, Steven Bubon looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Howland is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 3-5 otherwise.
Back at the plate, Dominic Santee was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Howland: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-5 otherwise. Luca Fronzaglio was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Howland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 3-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Cardinal Mooney is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.1 runs over those games. As for Howland, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-6.
Cardinal Mooney's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Cardinals have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Howland, though, as they've been averaging only 0.7 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Cardinal Mooney continue to outrun the ball?
Cardinal Mooney skirted past Howland 7-6 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
