Six spring sports contested their state titles this week. Here's what happened:
Baseball: Kentwood conquers Richland for title
Avery Kain threw a complete-game shutout, giving up just two hits, as the Kentwood Conquerors (21-3) beat the Richland Bombers in the championships game of the Class 4A state tournament, 8-0. Richland (20-6) was the defending state champ.
In the Class 3A state title game, O'Dea (21-8) repeated as state champs, beating Camas 8-5. Shane Smith went 4 for 4 with an inside-the-park homer.
Also, WF West beat RA Long for the Class 2A title, 8-1. Cashmere scored in the bottom of the seventh to beat Chimacum 5-4 for the Class 1A title. Seattle Lutheran beat Colfax 10-6 for the 2B title, and Almira/Coulee-Hartline beat Colton 8-1 for the 1B title.
Track and Field: Mead sweeps, breaks scoring record
The Mead Panthers of Spokane swept the Class 4A boys and girls title at the state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.
Mead won the boys total with 82.5 points, 11.5 points more than Lincoln scored in 1974.
The highlight of the meet came from Federal Way's Robert Shelby. The state leader in the 300 hurdles collapsed and was unconscious for three minutes 40 yards from the finish line.
He returned to the meet to help the Eagles break the record in the 1,600 relay. Federal Way ran it in 3 minutes, 15.66 seconds to break the 28-year-old record by Wilson.
Softball: Rain makes for long Saturday
Rain caused the Class 4A and 3A state softball tournament to condense to a single day.
Kelso (22-3) won its second straight girls title, winning four games in a single day. It beat Heritage of Vancouver 2-1 in an eight-inning championship game.
Bainbridge fell just short of repeating for the Class 3A state title, losing to Sedro-Wolley (26-2), 10-0 in the title game.
Also, Woodland beat Colville 8-1 for the 2A title. Castle Rock beat Cle Elum/Roslyn 7-3 for the 1A title. Pe Ell beat Adna 1-0 for the 2B title, and Colton beat Touchet 5-2 for the 1B title.
Soccer: Stadium wins 4A title
The Stadium Tigers (19-1), ranked No. 8 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, won the school's first boys soccer title, beating Lake Stevens (18-3-1) in the state title game, 1-0. Dylan Gaydosh scored the game's loan goal in the 30th minute.
In the Class 3A state title game, Glacier Peak (18-5), a two-year-old school in Snohomish, beat Mount Rainier (19-1-2) in overtime 2-1. Shane Miller scored on a header in the 88th minute.
Also, Bellingham beat Cheney 1-0 for the Class 2A title. Wahluke beat Overlake 3-0 for the Class 1A title.
Tennis: That's four titles for Kentwood's Manthou
Kentwood's Max Manthou wrapped up an undefeated high school career with his fourth state boys singles titles.
The Washington-bound Manthou beat Skyview's Kent Andreason 6-2, 6-2 in the final to finish his career 94-0.
Manthou is the only boys singles player in 4A to win four titles.
In the 3A girls singles title game, Bainbridge’s Sasha Carter beat Holy Names’ Natalie Allen, the defending state champ, 6-4, 6-2. Carter, a junior, also won a 1A title as a freshman.
Golf: Tan leads Holy Names to title
Holy Names senior Kristin Tan had her third straight Class 3A state top-three finish and she lead the Cougars to a second consecutive state team title.
Tan won state a sophomore. She was third last year and and second as a senior.
