Sandia is 6-1 against Atrisco Heritage Academy since November of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Sandia Matadors' road trip will continue as they head out to face the Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars at 7:00 p.m. on December 22nd. Sandia has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 574 points over their last eight matches.
Last Saturday, Sandia faced Eldorado in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The stars were shining brightly for Sandia in a 64-50 victory over Eldorado.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Sandia to victory, but perhaps none more so than Hope Giddings, who scored 17 points. The contest was Giddings' fifth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Sydney Benally, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, Atrisco Heritage Academy made easy work of Manzano on Wednesday and carried off a 64-39 win. The win was just what Atrisco Heritage Academy needed coming off of a 56-31 loss in their prior game.
Atrisco Heritage Academy got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Selim Neel out in front who scored 16 points along with eight steals and five rebounds. Those 16 points set a new season-high mark for her. Janessa Gallegos was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with five rebounds.
Sandia's win bumped their record up to 8-0. As for Atrisco Heritage Academy, the win got them back to even at 2-2.
Everything came up roses for Sandia against Atrisco Heritage Academy in their previous meeting back in December of 2022 as the squad secured a 87-49 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sandia since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
