Baseball Recap: Wynford Triumphs

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Mohawk, Wynford was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They came out on top against the Lucas Cubs by a score of 8-5. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Royals also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

Hunter Routson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up four earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). Routson was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Wynford's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-6 when he doesn't).

Routson wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Drew Johnson, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Johnson has become a key player for Wynford: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-6 otherwise. Another was Landon Miller, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Wynford has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Lucas, they moved to 10-6 with that loss, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wynford will host Colonel Crawford at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Lucas, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Northmor at 5:00 p.m. The Golden Knights' pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so the Cubs' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
