Basketball Recap: Corpus Christi Moody Falls Despite Big Games from Aaliyah Hazel and Shantaye Hazel

After flying high against Carroll last Tuesday, Corpus Christi Moody came back down to earth. The Corpus Christi Moody Trojans fell just short of the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles by a score of 46-44 on Friday. The Trojans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 41-36.

Corpus Christi Moody's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Shantaye Hazel, who went 8 for 13 on her way to 18 points along with six rebounds and three steals, and Aaliyah Hazel, who went 5 of 11 en route to 14 points and five boards. Shantaye has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 26 times she's played.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial to victory, but perhaps none more so than Amaris Alva, who went 5 for 10 en route to 10 points and seven rebounds. That's the most points Alva has posted since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Zoe Perry, who posted seven points and 14 boards.

The loss snapped Corpus Christi Moody's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 23-9 record. As for Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 matches, which provided a massive bump to their 14-16 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Corpus Christi Moody will square off against Miller at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing isn't great for Miller: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Corpus Christi Moody has snatched up six consecutive wins on the road. As for Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, they will take on Carroll at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
