On Monday, the Boyd County Lions faced the Russell Red Devils in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Boyd County was the victim of a tough 67-47 loss at the hands of the Red Devils. It was the first time this season that Boyd County let down their fans at home.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Russell to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shaelyn Steele, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and ten rebounds. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Steele has scored at least a third of Russell's points. Gabby Oborne was another key contributor, scoring 16 points.
Boyd County's loss ended a ten-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 17-6. As for Russell, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Boyd County will challenge the Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Fleming County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings (they are ranked 67th, while the Lions are ranked sixth). Russell's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Musketeers at 6:00 p.m. on February 1st.
