2A/1A Northwest recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to West Stokes, who took down 205th ranked East Surry, 12-8.
Mount Airy was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in 2A/1A Northwest. Earlier in the week, the Bears defeated Surry Central 35-7.
The Cardinals' dynamic duo of John Snow and Jeremy Gilley proved tough for the Wildcats to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Snow threw for 118 yards and one touchdown and Gilley had 125 yards receiving. RJ Lawson helped East Surry's passing attack out by catching three balls for 42 yards.
Jacquan Martin was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 16 carries, he ran for 195 yards as South Stokes fell to West Stokes. JJ Davis also contributed to the rushing game with 108 yards on the ground.
North Stokes's Garrett Wood and Matthew Hopkins have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Wood has thrown for 1432 yards this season, while Hopkins, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 37 catches for 541 yards. Martin from the Sauras leads the league in rushing with 1266 yards.
The top two teams in 2A/1A Northwest will face off this week when first place South Stokes takes on second place North Surry. South Stokes defeated Bishop McGuinness last week, while North Surry beat North Stokes.
Jonathan Frasher's team extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Villains, 37-6. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Sauras.
