The Walnut Mustangs entered their tilt with the Canyon Springs Cougars with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. Walnut strolled past Canyon Springs with points to spare on Thursday, taking the game 66-47. Given Walnut's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 262nd, while Canyon Springs is ranked 639th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Walnut to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nathan Yen, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds. Yen has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 11 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Myles Wainwright, who scored 15 points.
Canyon Springs' loss came despite strong showings from Kayden Mims and Tyler Vann. Mims scored six points along with three steals, while Vann scored 12 points along with five rebounds. The contest was Vann's third in a row with at least ten points.
Canyon Springs struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Walnut racked up 14 assists.
Walnut is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. As for Canyon Springs, their loss dropped their record down to 9-7.
Walnut and Covina will face off at 7:30 p.m. on December 29th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. One thing working in Covina's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three games. Canyon Springs and Indian Springs will face off at 6:00 p.m. on December 29th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Indian Springs focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Thursday.
