Basketball Recap: Ouray Falls Despite Big Games from Keaton Nelson and Conner Hill

Ouray was the 52-46 winner over Dolores when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Ouray Trojans fell just short of the Dolores Bears by a score of 59-57 on Saturday. The Trojans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Ouray's loss came despite strong showings from Conner Hill and Keaton Nelson. Hill dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 boards, while Nelson went 9 of 15 en route to 20 points and five assists. What's more, Hill also racked up four steals, the most he's had since back in February of 2024. Wesley Rhoades was another key player, putting up nine points.

Even though they lost, Ouray smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive contests.

Leading Dolores to victory were Trayton Traweek and Koby McClellan. Traweek went 11 for 26 on his way to 26 points and eight rebounds, while McClellan posted 22 points and five assists. The match was Traweek's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Nielson, who earned two points in addition to ten boards and three steals.

Ouray's defeat dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Dolores, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Ouray will head out to take on Telluride at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Dolores, they will head out on the road to square off against Nucla at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
