The Huntington North Vikings are taking a road trip to face off against the Leo Lions at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Huntington North is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Huntington North is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering DeKalb just ended the team's ten-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Barons by a score of 5-3.
Huntington North got a good showing from Caiden Pohler, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Pohler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Huntington North saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cruz Kindler, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run.
Meanwhile, Leo had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Railroaders with a sharp 15-6 win. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by six runs or more this season.
The team relied heavily on Brady Sharp, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (two). Ethan Wudy was another key player, going 1-for-2 with four runs and one stolen base.
Leo hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Garrett struck out seven times.
Leo's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Huntington North, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 13-5.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Huntington North has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .436. However, it's not like Leo struggles in that department as they've averaged .479. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Huntington North came out on top in a nail-biter against Leo in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 5-4. Will the Vikings repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
