Flagstaff and Coconino are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Eagles will square off against the Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Flagstaff sitting on 11 straight victories and Coconino on 16.
Flagstaff's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They blew past Verrado 7-0. Considering the Eagles have won 13 games by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Ryleigh Alex, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Sophia Garcia, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
Flagstaff was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .381. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in six consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Coconino got the win against Bradshaw Mountain on Thursday by a conclusive 17-1. The Panthers are also no stranger to big wins: their blowout was the 18th contest they've won by 6+ runs this season.
Kaitlyn Tso made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 23 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Danica Kern was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with six stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those six stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Hailey Householder also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Coconino's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 21-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Flagstaff, their record is now 15-6-1.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Flagstaff has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .474. However, it's not like Coconino struggles in that department as they've averaged .451. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Flagstaff couldn't quite get it done against Coconino in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 as they fell 3-0. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
