II Section V recap November 5, 2013
Salpointe Catholic added to the longest winning streak in II Section V this week by beating Tucson High Magnet School, 49-7. The victory was the 10th in a row for the Lancers.
Salpointe Catholic led the league in scoring this week by notching 49 points on the Badgers. Cameron Denson threw for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 76 yards during the win.
Ironwood Ridge's dynamic duo of Dylan Key and Matt Solverson proved to be unstoppable against Vista Grande, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Key threw for 180 yards and 4 touchdowns and Solverson had 88 yards receiving. Michael Franzese helped Ironwood Ridge's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 51 yards.
He was 12-21 with 0 interceptions.
Richie Estrada was a passing and rushing force as Mountain View topped Rincon.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Dennis Bene's team's Andrew Cota and Denson have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-1 quarterback Cota has thrown for 1,716 yards this season, while Denson has 43 catches for 940 yards. Estrada from the Mountain Lions leads the league in rushing with 1,508 yards.
Tucson High Magnet School's Bryce Coleman needs only 67 yards against Centennial next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 120 carries Coleman has put up 933 yards this year.
The Lancers' Denson needs only 60 receiving yards against Cibola to crack 1,000 for the season. So far this year, he has garnered 43 catches for 940 yards.
The Rangers made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 12,809 from 12,970. The improvement was the result of a 49-0 victory over Rincon last week.
