The LaBelle Cowboys/Cowgirls scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Monday. They really took it to Dunbar for the full four quarters, racking up a 71-33 victory on the road. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest victory LaBelle has managed all season.
Marissa Burchard was her usual excellent self, shooting 6-for-9 from beyond the arc and dropping a double-double on 36 points and 13 steals. That makes it six consecutive games in which she has scored at least 25% of LaBelle's points. Another player making a difference was Aariah Johnson, who almost dropped a triple-double on 22 points, nine rebounds, and 11 steals.
Despite the defeat, Dunbar saw an underclassman step up: Carmen Johnson dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Johnson scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tatiana Jean-simon, who scored eight points along with six rebounds.
The victory got LaBelle back to even at 4-4. As for Dunbar, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-4.
LaBelle will head out on the road to face off against Moore Haven at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Dunbar, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Ida Baker at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ida Baker presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Dunbar in Florida (Ida Baker is ranked 228th, while Dunbar is ranked 605th).
