The Wingfield Falcons will head out on the road to face off against the Brookhaven Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Wingfield has struggled recently with 11 defeats in a row, while Brookhaven will arrive with six straight victories.
Last Tuesday, Wingfield suffered a tough 76-54 loss at the hands of Murrah.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Tyler Arrington, who scored 20 points along with three steals. The matchup was his seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Orenthal Claiborne, who scored 11 points.
Wingfield struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They are winless (0-3) when they can't control their own glass like that.
Meanwhile, even though Crystal Springs scored an imposing 61 points on Tuesday, Brookhaven still came out on top. Brookhaven took their game against Crystal Springs 70-61. Given Brookhaven's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while Crystal Springs is ranked 149th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Brookhaven's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jamarius Malone, who scored 19 points. Those 19 points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylen Haliburton, who scored 19 points along with six rebounds.
Wingfield's defeat was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-9. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.2 points per game. As for Brookhaven, their victory bumped their record up to 9-2.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Wingfield hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 50.7 points per game. It's a different story for Brookhaven, though, as they've been averaging only 56.2 points per game. The only thing between Wingfield and another offensive beatdown is Brookhaven. Will they be able to keep them contained?
Wingfield ended up a good deal behind Brookhaven in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, losing 74-55. Thankfully for Wingfield, Willie j j Rice (who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and five assists) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
