The defense contributed on the scoring end for
South Stokes (Walnut Cove, N.C.) on Saturday, totaling 12 points as the Sauras bested
East Surry (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) 32-3.
The Sauras were up 12-3 at the half after taking the lead on a
Jacquan Martin touchdown run in the first quarter.
South Stokes secured its victory by scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter to push the final margin to 29.
Martin stood out for SS in the win. The junior running back ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored 22 touchdowns on the season.
The Cardinals'
Ethan Atkins played well. The junior kicked one field goal.
The Walnut Cove school had given up an average of 15.7 points prior to the contest. East Surry's three points were well below its season average of 17.0 per game. ES came in allowing just 17.4 points per game this season. The Pilot Mountain school struggled against the Sauras' offense, which entered the game scoring 35.7 points per game.
South Stokes got revenge for last year's 21-13 loss to the Cardinals with the victory.
The win was a nice bounce back for SS, which lost to North Surry last week, 23-20. The loss comes after East Surry defeated Bishop McGuinness 20-7 last week.
South Stokes (6-1) will play a 2A/1A Northwest game against West Stokes next week, while East Surry (4-4) will take on North Stokes also in a 2A/1A Northwest game.
