The Gregory Gorillas fell to the Burke/South Central Cougars 43-34 when the two teams previously met in February of last year; this time around, they exacted some revenge. Gregory was able to grind out a solid win over Burke/South Central this past Thursday, winning 69-61. The victory was familiar territory for the Gorillas, who now have four in a row.
The game started off well for Gregory, whose offense put up 33 first-half points. Burke/South Central was right behind to make the score 33-30 heading into the break. The offense for Gregory continued to do well in the second half, scoring another 36 points to put the game away.
Freshman Jessy Jo VanDerWerff and senior Sydney Svatos were among the main playmakers for Gregory as the former had 25 points and seven assists and the latter dropped a double-double on 18 points and 15 rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Svatos has had at least 11 rebounds.
The Gorillas' victory brought them up to 11-9. The Cougars' overall record fell to 13-10.
The Gorillas and Colome will go head to head Monday in their first playoff matchup of the year. Coming off of a win even when the odds were against them, Gregory has to be feeling especially confident with the MaxPreps rankings on their side for this one. Burke/South Central is staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Tripp-Delmont/Armour. Coming off of a loss in a game they were expected to win, Burke/South Central now face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.
