You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Huntingdon's strategy against Somerset on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Bearcats blew the Eagles out of the water with a 48-12 final score. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 27-0.
Huntingdon's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Landon Erdman, who rushed for 128 yards and two TDs on only 15 carries. Erdman didn't just play on offense: he also picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made five total tackles (3.0 for loss). Another rusher making a difference was Evan Edmiston, who gained 117 total yards and two touchdowns.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Huntingdon proved: they limited Somerset to a paltry 2.1 yards per carry. The team can thank Connor McGraw for the heroic effort on defense: he. Huntingdon didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 8.3.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Huntingdon, adding 12 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Elliott Guisler, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
Despite the defeat, Somerset saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Deacon Sherbine picked up 70 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Sherbine was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield on a catch that went for 53 yards.
Huntingdon has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 31.0 points this season. As for Somerset, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.
We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Huntingdon will square off against rival Bellwood-Antis at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Somerset is set to face off against their familiar foe Greater Johnstown at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
