Henry Brooks of three-time defending Georgia Class AAAA state champion
Miller Grove (Lithonia) is headed to the Ivy League.
Miller Grove head coach Sharman White confirmed the 6-foot-8, 195-pound forward committed to Pennsylvania on Monday, ending an up-and-down few weeks that began March 4 when he tore his ACL in a state tournament game.
"It's really just a tribute to him and his work ethic," White said. "It speaks to his will to compete not only on the floor, but in the classroom. He is the definition of 'student-athlete.'"
The Wolverines three-peated despite Brooks being forced to miss the semifinals and championship game. Thanks to his 3.9 grade point average, options remained available to Brooks despite the injury.
"The whole situation came full circle," White said. "Pennsylvania is where he took his first visit and Coach (Jerome) Allen never went away, never stopped recruiting him. It's the right fit for him. Not only is he a great student but he is going to do great things basketball-wise."
Binghamton, Georgia Southern and North Florida were among other schools in pursuit following the ACL tear.
Playing alongside junior All-American candidate
Tony Parker this season, he posted 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Brooks helped Miller Grove achieve a No. 7 national ranking and compile a record of 89-10 over the past three years.
Alcorn State picks high school coachProvine (Jackson, Miss.) head coach Luther Riley was hired Monday by Alcorn State University.
Like college coaches making the jump to the NFL or NBA, the move from high school sports to Division I college athletics is a tough transition. The school is convinced Riley is the man to make it work.
"I feel like he is the right man for the job and he will be good in getting us back on track," search committee member Charles McClelland said. "He has a great knowledge and passion for the game of basketball, plus he's won championships."
Riley went 286-70 in 11 years at Provine, leading the Rams to seven state championship games over that span with four titles.
Alcorn State struggled to a 4-23 overall record in 2010-11, including a 13-game losing streak to begin the season.
