Calvert is 8-2 against St. Mary Central Catholic since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Senecas will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 5:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
On Friday, Calvert was able to grind out a solid win over Hopewell-Loudon, taking the game 7-2. The Senecas haven't had any issues with the Chieftains recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Blake Coleman made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over six innings pitched. Coleman was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
Coleman wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Vencenzo Lyons, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, St. Mary Central Catholic put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on St. Joseph Central Catholic with a sharp 11-1 win.
Like Calvert, St. Mary Central Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Reid Wikel. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over six innings pitched. Those ten strikeouts gave Wikel a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, St. Mary Central Catholic let Sam Lawrence and Cullen Dillard run wild. Lawrence scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Dillard scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-4. Those two stolen bases gave Lawrence a new career-high. Cayden Wikel was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
St. Mary Central Catholic's victory was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-0. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 7.5 runs this season. As for Calvert, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Calvert has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Mary Central Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Calvert took their victory against St. Mary Central Catholic in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Will the Senecas repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
