The win was all the more spectacular given Glenwood Springs' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 123rd, while Montrose is ranked 25th).
Sim Wenger was his usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with six rebounds and four steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Glenwood Springs' points. Another player making a difference was Alec Claassen, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Montrose lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kaleb Ferguson. Despite the final result, he scored 22 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. Jaxon Kattner was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Glenwood Springs' win bumped their record up to 5-8. As for Montrose, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 10-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Glenwood Springs will take on Palisade at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant players against one another: Hunter Howard and Wenger. As for Montrose, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Eagle Valley at 4:00 p.m. Eagle Valley is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games.
