The West Potomac Wolverines will challenge the West Springfield Spartans at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. West Potomac has given up an average of 11.9 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when West Potomac and Robinson meet (six straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Wednesday. The Wolverines came up short against the Rams, falling 20-2.
West Potomac saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ashley McGuckin, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-1. Those stolen bases marked the first that McGuckin snagged this season.
Meanwhile, West Springfield came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Titans as they made off with a 15-1 victory. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by six runs or more this season.
West Springfield let Alexa Harvey and Kate Middendorf run wild. Harvey went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Middendorf went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Lee, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
West Springfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits every time they've taken the field this season.
West Springfield pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for West Potomac, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-6.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. West Potomac hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .326. However, it's not like West Springfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .417. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Potomac might still be hurting after the 8-2 loss they got from West Springfield in their previous matchup back in March. Will the Wolverines have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
