The Middletown Cavaliers waltzed into their match on Monday with two straight wins but they left with three. They came out on top against Overbrook by a score of 59-46. Given Middletown's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 11th in Delaware, while Overbrook is ranked 168th in Pennsylvania), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
When it comes to explaining why Overbrook lost, one person who can't be blamed is Nasir Kelly. Despite the final result, he scored 20 points along with two steals. Kelly has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tahmiere Manning, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds.
Middletown pushed their record up to 5-3 with that win, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.1 points per game. As for Overbrook, their loss dropped their record down to 9-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Middletown will face off against Appoquinimink at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Overbrook won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Murrell Dobbins Vo-Tech at 3:15 p.m. on January 16th. Murrell Dobbins Vo-Tech knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four games -- so hopefully Overbrook likes a good challenge.
