Penn Wood hasn't had much luck against Chichester recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Patriots will head out to challenge the Eagles at 5:45 p.m.
Penn Wood managed to slip by Academy Park the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Patriots came up short against the Knights on Tuesday, falling 10-0. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last three times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Meanwhile, Chichester entered their tilt with Chester on Tuesday with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. They never let the Clippers get on the board and left with an 18-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won ten contests by nine runs or more so far this season.
Cole Sanford and Logan Werley made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Sanford tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Werley tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Sanford has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. At the plate, Sanford got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs, while Werley went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one double. Chichester is undefeated when Sanford posts two or more runs, but 2-4 otherwise.
In other batting news, Gavin Derrickson was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. Those six RBI gave him a new career-high. Luke Werley was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
Chichester was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. They are 10-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Chichester's record is now 11-4. As for Penn Wood, their loss dropped their record down to 3-8.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Penn Wood has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .455. However, it's not like Chichester struggles in that department as they've averaged .580. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Penn Wood might still be hurting after the 18-0 defeat they got from Chichester when the teams last played two weeks ago. Can the Patriots avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
