The St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish will take on the Springfield Spartans at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (St. Vincent-St. Mary has three straight wins, Springfield has four straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Monday, St. Vincent-St. Mary beat Chagrin Falls 7-3.
Rylan Hurley was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Logan Henderson, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
St. Vincent-St. Mary always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .513 or higher in three consecutive matchups.
Field hit Springfield with a eight-run third inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans lost 12-2 to the Falcons.
Springfield saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nathan Meyer, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
St. Vincent-St. Mary pushed their record up to 14-7 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Springfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-17.
Springfield's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. St. Vincent-St. Mary has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Springfield, though, as they've been averaging only 3.4 strikeouts. Will St. Vincent-St. Mary keep running through batters, or will the Spartans buck the trend?
St. Vincent-St. Mary skirted past Springfield 4-3 when the teams last played back in March of 2015. Do the Fighting Irish have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spartans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
