Fastpitch Softball: Stavola Sits Down State-Record 24 Batters
East Hampton's Jesse Stavola took advantage of extra innings and nine extra outs to reach a milestone against Miller Place May 7.
Stavola struck out 24 batters in a 1-0 victory last Monday, improving her record to 14-0 on the season with 200 strikeouts.
Stavola, who already owned the Suffolk County strike out record, broke Broadalbin-Perth's Katie Finch's mark of 23. East Hampton will have the No. 1 seed in the Suffolk playoffs.
Ironically, Miller Place lost, 1-0, in extra-innings to Shoreham-Wading River two days later.
Softball Notes
While Stavola was busy striking out 24, Lindenhurst's Maggie Cronin struck out 11 and threw a one-hitter against Ward Melville in a 9-1 win. She set the Lindenhurst career strike out record with 225.Bay Shore's Erika Sullivan also threw a one-hitter. The Maurauder ace struck out 13 Northport batters in a 2-0 win and improved her team's record to 14-2 in League II.
Baseball: Aces Doing Their Thing
Dan Barnes has been making noise for Manhasset for the last couple of seasons. So it was nothing new when he struck out 14 hitters in an 8-2 win over Mineola May 7. He also break the Manhasset career strike out record by throwing No. 248.
Malverne's Steve Zimmerman did what an ace is supposed to do for a talented team - win. He struck out six Friends Academy hitters and allowed just three hits in a 3-1 win May 7. Malverne is 11-4.
Garden City beat Hewlett, 5-1, thanks to Rob Finneran's 12-strike out performance. He added to his cause with solo homerun and allowed just two hits in the contest.
Dan Reiser added his name to Long Island's no-hitter list this year. While the New York Mets can't seem to record the franchise's first no-no, Reiser fanned 12 Shelter Island/Ross hitters and walked one in a 10-0 no-hit win for Pierson/Bridgehampton May 8.
Baseball Notes
Rich Ireland waited the entire game to make his mark, but his two-run homer in the top of seventh was all Mattituck needed to beat Southampton 2-0 May 8. Mattituck is 14-5.Steve Steracci is the Jose Reyes of Connetquot's team and even Reyes would have a hard time accomplishing what Steracci did last week. He hit three triples in one game and had four RBI in the 11-6 win over Commack, helping his team improve to 18-1 on the season.St. Mary's is the proud owner of a three-game win streak to improve to 6-11, including a 3-2 win over Chaminade Saturday. Chaminade, 3-2, on May 12.Chaminade was coming off a three-game win streak of its own with a sweep of Holy Trinity. Chaminade clinched the top seed of the CHSAA playoffs after the second win in that series.
Girls' Lacrosse: Smith on a Tear for West Babylon
There is only one word to describe West Babylon's Shannon Smith. Ridiculous. And it's ridiculous in a good way.
Smith, a junior, set the New York State scoring record with 129 goals on the lacrosse field as a sophomore last season and she is on pace for similar exploits this year.
Last Monday she scored eight goals in a 16-12 win over Commack, then scored four more in a 23-5 win over Brentwood Wednesday. Smith added seven goals and four assists in a 20-3 win over Patchogue-Medford Friday.
She has 91 goals as of May 13 and has two regular season games left. West Babylon hosts Bay Shore Tuesday and Smithtown East Thursday. Her season high for goals in a game is 11, which she did twice. Smith has a shot to break 100 in the regular season and if West Babylon can go far enough in the postseason, she may be able to pass her own record.
The Eagles are 8-5 and in sixth place in Suffolk's Division I.
