The Capitan Tigers will take on the Mesilla Valley Christian School SonBlazers at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Capitan has struggled recently with 11 losses in a row, while Mesilla Valley Christian School will arrive with three straight victories.
Capitan came up short against Magdalena on Tuesday, falling 29-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Tigers have suffered against the Steers since March 21, 2015.
Christian Marquez-Padilla made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 3-for-3.
Meanwhile, Mesilla Valley Christian School won against Oak Grove Classical Academy on Saturday with 14 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. Everything went the SonBlazers' way against Hatch Valley as they made off with a 14-5 win. The result was nothing new for the SonBlazers, who have now won four contests by nine runs or more so far this season.
Jeremiah Sullivan made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing three bases while going 2-for-4. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last 13 games he's played dating back to last season.
In other batting news, Weston Marr was a standout: he went a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Matt Borde, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
Mesilla Valley Christian School kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 23 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Mesilla Valley Christian School's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-3. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Capitan, their loss dropped their record down to 0-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Capitan has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mesilla Valley Christian School struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more. Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
