After losing to Palmview the last time they met, Nixon decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Nixon Mustangs walked away with a 68-56 victory over the Palmview Lobos on Friday. The win was nothing new for the Mustangs as they're now sitting on eight straight.
Nixon had a senior duo take command as Mason Vela went 7 for 17 en route to 19 points along with five assists and five rebounds and Uli Torres went 8 of 13 on his way to 19 points and six boards. Vela has been hot, having posted 19 or more points the last eight times he's played. AJ Palacios was another key player, putting up ten points and five boards.
Nixon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in four consecutive matches.
Several Lobos players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jose L Gonzalez, who went 8 of 20 on his way to 24 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Leo Rivero, who went 6 for 14 en route to 14 points and five rebounds.
Nixon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 games, which provided a massive bump to their 21-9 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 83.9 points per game. As for Palmview, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 19-13.
Nixon will host Martin at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (Nixon has won five straight at home, while Martin won three straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
