Malik Newman at Mississippi State, but Kansas isn't a bad fallback option.
KUSports.com reported Friday that Newman is transferring to Kansas after a disappointing season in Starkville under head coach Ben Howland.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard averaged a respectable 11.3 points per game as a freshman, but the Bulldogs struggled to a 14-17 record and it all fell short of the massive expectations Newman shouldered coming out of high school.
In four seasons at
Callaway (Jackson), Newman led the Chargers to four state titles and piled up 3,108 points. He spent his summers with USA Basketball, winning a pair of gold medals and earning MVP honors at international competitions in Uruguay and Dubai.

As a senior in 2014-15, Newman averaged 29.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while leading Callaway to its fourth consecutive title. He was named to the MaxPreps All-American first team and earned a spot in the McDonald's All-American Game.
His arrival in Starkville was hailed as a potential game-changer for the Bulldogs but things never quite clicked with Howland.
Newman will have to sit out the 2016-17 season in Lawrence.
