The Loomis Wolves will head out on the road to face off against the Axtell Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nebraska (Loomis is ranked 70th, while Axtell is ranked 50th).
Loomis fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They enjoyed a cozy 38-20 victory over Bertrand on Friday.
Loomis found their leader in underclassman Cauy Meyer, who rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 43 yards and a touchdown. Meyer is on a roll when it comes to solo tackles, as he's now made six or more in the last eight games he's played. Cale Nelson was in the mix too, providing Loomis with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Axtell had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32.5 points), and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They secured a 12-8 W over Kenesaw.
Elijah Bergstrom continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 214 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.4 yards per carry. Bergstrom was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 55 yards.
Their wins bumped Loomis to 4-4 and Axtell to 6-2.
Thursday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Loomis has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 159.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Axtell struggles in that department as they've been even better at 236.1 per game. It's looking like Thursday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Loomis against Axtell in their previous meeting back in October of 2021 as the squad secured a 48-12 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Loomis since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
