The Lumberton Pirates are taking a road trip to challenge the Gray's Creek Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Lumberton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Lumberton's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They had just enough and edged out South View 1-0. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Pirates.
South View's batters probably weren't too happy with Caiden Hall, who pitched a no hitter and racked up nine Ks (he gave up three walks). Hall has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Lumberton saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brody Stueck, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gray's Creek). They were the clear victors by a 23-0 margin over Douglas Byrd on Friday. The victory was familiar territory for the Bears, who have now won three matches in a row.
The team relied heavily on Gunner Sterling, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Dalton Williams, who scored three runs while going 2-for-3.
Gray's Creek always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .692. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Lumberton's record is now 11-3. As for Gray's Creek, their record now sits at 9-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Lumberton has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Gray's Creek struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Lumberton skirted past Gray's Creek 4-2 in their previous meeting back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
