Basketball Recap: Rio Rancho Picks Up Fifth Consecutive Victory

Rio Rancho had won four straight games and Madilynn Martinez did her part to make it five on Tuesday. The Rio Rancho Rams blew past the Piedra Vista Panthers 62-38 for which the team can thank Martinez, who went 9-for-17 en route to 23 points and seven steals. The game was her third in a row with at least 16 points.

Larissa Martinez was another key player, shooting 42% from the field to rack up 13 points. She is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 11 games she's played.

Piedra Vista's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tyra Holyan, who posted 13 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jaime Pierce, who put up 13 points.

Rio Rancho pushed their record up to 19-9 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.3 points over those games. As for Piedra Vista, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-16.

Rio Rancho has already played their next match, a 61-45 win against Volcano Vista on the 26th. Piedra Vista will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Hobbs at 6:00 p.m. on March 7th. Hobbs will roll in looking for their 26th straight victory, something Piedra Vista surely won't give up without a fight.
